Let’s Talk! is a podcast series hosted by the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI) at UL Research Institutes. The series aims to hear the views and learn from scientists, researchers and subject matter experts about specific areas of interest in the energy storage sector and to share the knowledge with our collaborators. Dr. Jason Ostanek, an assistant professor at Purdue University, highlights the role of modeling and simulation in the safety of lithium-ion batteries. He summarizes challenges associated with developing a comprehensive thermal runaway model and possible ways to overcome these challenges. Also, he sheds light on multiple strategies to accelerate battery failure modeling and simulation and shares his perspective on scaling these models to larger systems. Our Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI) conducts fundamental scientific research to understand the safety and performance of energy technologies.
